Amoroso's baking company announces mass lay-offs

All workers at Philadelphia facility will have to re-apply for jobs in new facility in NJ

The company that bakes the bread found in many Philly cheesesteaks will no longer be based in Philly.

Amoroso's Baking Company announced Wednesday that it will fire around 200 employees in October as it begins its relocation to a new facility in New Jersey, the Philadelphia Business Journal reported.

The company is laying off all the workers at its facility on 845 S. 55th St and will require them to re-apply for positions at the new facility in Bellmawr, Camden County.

The relocation comes after Amoroso merged with Ginsburg Bakery, which employed 159 people in Atlantic City.

Amoroso said that the move was necessary because the company needed a bigger facility. The new plant will be 390,000 square feet.

""We do understand that this change will be difficult for many of you. A move like this is never easy, but we are thankful we were able to find a new modern facility in such a close proximity to the city," said the company in a memo to workers.

According to Amoroso's website, the company was founded in Camden in 1904 and has been based in Philadelphia since 1914.
