Bomb scare prompts evacuation at New Jersey theater

Police: Incident stemmed from loud thud inside theater

A movie theater in northern New Jersey was evacuated Saturday night after authorities received false reports of a bomb and a shooting, officials said.

The incident occurred at the Edgewater Multiplex Cinemas in Bergen County, where a dispute inside the theater prompted a man to yell and then jump over several seats, producing a loud noise, Edgewater Police Chief William Skidmore told NJ.com.

The noise caused alarm among some moviegoers, who took to social media to report a gunshot or a bomb. One person called 911 to report that an active shooter might be inside the theater, while security staff alerted police that a bomb might be involved.

Out of precaution, the theater was evacuated around 9:30 p.m. Moviegoers described the scene on social media, but it turns out the scare was a misunderstanding, police said. There was no shooting or bomb at the theater.

One person suffered a minor arm injury while evacuating the theater, Skidmore said. There was no word on the nature of the initial dispute and why the man responsible for the loud noise fell inside the theater.
