Brian Williams donated $50,000 during Saturday night's Save the Seraphs Gala to support his struggling high school, Mater Dei Prep.

Brian Williams, who was suspended from "NBC Nightly News" in February, attended a fundraising gala Saturday for his alma mater, the Asbury Park Press reports.

Mater Dei Prep, in Middletown, announced its impending closure in February, just days before Williams, a Middletown native, was suspended by NBC.

In his first public appearance since his suspension, Williams, a 1977 graduate of the Catholic Preparatory School, showed up to Saturday night's Save the Seraphs Gala at Shore Casino in Atlantic Highlands with his wife, Jane. He donated $50,000 toward the The Seraph's Fund.

The sold-out event raised $95,000 for The Seraph's Fund, bringing the fundraising campaign's total to $962,000. Supporters must raise $1 million to keep the 50-year-old school from closing in June.

The gala was "a fantastic success," gala chair Maria Buzzanco told the Asbury Park Press. "We were overwhelmed by the support from the entire Mater Dei Prep community."
