Cell service enhancements added for papal visit

AT&T and Verizon spending $42 million to make temporary and permanent upgrades around the region

AT&T and Verizon have contributed a combined $42 million to add temporary and permanent service enhancements throughout the city in preparation for the Pope’s visit in September.

According to NBC 10 reporter Vince Lattanzio, more than 100 service technicians were working in the area near the Benjamin Franklin Parkway Tuesday to install mobile cell towers, called COWs or cells on wheels, and to expand high-speed 4G LTE voice and data service systems.

An estimated 1.5 million visitors are expected to flock to Philadelphia for Pope Francis' visit Sept. 26-27.

Verizon also installed indoor cell sites at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, where the World Meeting of Families conference will be held, and it's evaluating the service capacity on SEPTA's rail lines, Lattanzio said.
