Chesco woman convicted for defrauding workers' comp benefits

Allegedly stole nearly $200,000 in benefits after healing from work injury

A Chester County woman was convicted Thursday of stealing thousands of dollars in benefits years after recovering from an injury.

According to federal prosecutors, 62-year-old Barbara Stanley of Nottingham stole approximately $164,000 in workers' compensation benefits from the U.S. Department of Labor between July 2006 and December 2010.

During that period, she allegedly made false statements to the Department of Labor about her medical condition, concealing the fact that she had recovered from a work-related injury.

In addition, prosecutors say Stanley fraudulently collected around $35,000 in disability retirement benefits from the Office of Personal Management during the same time period, bringing the approximate total of stolen funds to $199,000.

She has been convicted on five counts of wire fraud, two counts of theft of government funds, two counts of making false statements, and two counts of making false statements regarding workers' compensation benefits.

A sentencing date has not been set. Stanley faces an advisory sentence of 24 to 30 months in prison.
