The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) fell to second place in U.S. News & World Report’s annual ranking of the best children’s hospitals in the United States.

Surpassing CHOP was Boston Children's Hospital, which tied with CHOP for the top spot last year.

U.S. News used detailed surveys to gather data from 184 pediatric centers. The rankings evaluated hospitals in 10 specialties: cancer, cardiology/heart surgery, diabetes/endocrinology, gastroenterology/GI surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology/neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.

Each hospital's score also factored in surveys in 2013, 2014 and 2015 "of more than 10,000 pediatric specialists who were asked where they would send the sickest children in their specialty," according to the report.

CHOP was one of 12 hospitals named to the publication’s honor roll for providing “especially high-quality care” in three or more specialties.

CHOP ranked first in neonatology and orthopedics, second in diabetes/endocrinology and urology and third in four other categories. Boston Children’s Hospital ranked first in seven of the 10 specialties.
