Working with clay is a relaxing, creative hobby.

The Clay Studio's free Clay Fest returns for its second year Sept. 10. All are invited to the Old City studio to spend the day playing with clay, beginning at 11 a.m.

The event is family-friendly and involves a range of hands-on activities. Festival-goers will have a chance to get artsy and messy. Below is the day's breakdown.

Group Sculpting: All day

One thousand pounds of clay will be used to create art inspired by the exhibit FoodJawn. Every attendee has a chance to contribute to the sculpture.

Artist Demonstrations: All day

Artists will demonstrate how to use clay to create art.

Early Afternoon Drop-In Community Workshops: 11 a.m to 2 p.m.

Wheel Throwing 101 – Try throwing on the potter’s wheel under the guidance of The Clay Studio artists. Decorate your creation and the studio will have it ready for pick up in the next few weeks.

Clay Animation – Create and animate clay characters using the art of stop motion. One person or a group can create a story, supply voices for characters and bring creations to life.

Silk Screening with Little Chair Printing – Work with teacher/artist and owner of Little Chair Printing, Hope Rovelto, to make a silk-screened t-shirt. Note that t-shirt quantities are limited.

Late Afternoon Drop-In Community Workshops: 2-5 p.m.

We All Scream for Ice Cream Bowls – Decorate an artist-made bowl provided by The Clay Studio and it will be ready for pick up in the next few weeks.

Hand Crafted Ice Cream Social: 2-4 p.m.

Enjoy an ice cream tasting.

Gallery Talks: 2-4 p.m.

Kelcy Chase Folsom and Lauren Mabry, both former resident artists at The Clay Studio, will discuss their solo exhibitions.
