Cooking mistakes you need to stop making

Cooking

There's plenty of advice on the Internet telling you how to cook properly. But what about the things you're doing wrong in the kitchen?

Bad habits are always hard to break, and the way you prepare food is no different. That's why Good Housekeeping recently asked several of its cooking experts on what you shouldn't be doing when you cook. Here are some of the highlights:

• Don't store your dairy products in the fridge door - that's the warmest area and will cause milk and yogurt to spoil faster. Instead, store them in the inner shelves.

• Taste your food while you cook. Even the most talented chefs make sure to sample their dishes along the way, so not checking in on the flavor of your meal throughout the process is a big mistake.

• Don't substitute ingredients. Every part of any good recipe is in there for a reason, and swapping out even a minor ingredient can significantly change the taste of a meal. Stick to the script, or make something else.

• Never wing it. Make sure to plan out how long each part of a dish is going to take to prepare or cook. You could end up wasting plenty of time by not mapping out what steps are needed in a recipe, which often leads to a haphazardly prepared meal.
