Craft breweries could soon be allowed in dry South Jersey town

Craft breweries could soon make their way to the dry town of Collingswood with an ordinance to be considered by officials Monday, the Philadelphia Business Journal reports.

The ordinance, which could be approved as soon as early August, comes after months of study and a 2012 state law that eased restrictions on microbreweries.

"The overwhelming response from residents has been in favor with a firm expression that breweries would be a great complement to our business district," Mayor James Maley told Philly.com. "There was little to no concern that this would affect the family-friendly nature of Collingswood or cause an unruly bar scene."

While many residents and merchants in the area support the idea, local restaurants fear their business could be compromised if the breweries decide to sell food in the future.

City officials proposed a ban on food service at the microbreweries to avoid those concerns.

The beer scene is on the rise in nearby Philadelphia, with beer gardens popping up around the city.
