As those in the know will tell you, autumn is secretly the best season at the shore, when crowds are thinner but the sun is still shining and there's plenty to do.

Below are four reasons to head to the shore this Fall, from seafood festivals to a celebration of the post-summer silence.

Avalon Seafood Festival

Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10-11

Summer may be over, but local seafood is a year-round staple of the shore. Avalon's annual Seafood Festival gives you a reason to return to the salt air and indulge in the flavors of the sea.

Sea Isle City is known for its beaches and bar scene. But an equally integral, and often overlooked, aspect of the city is its fishing industry.

Walk towards the bay and you will stumble upon “Fish Alley,” a haven of seafood restaurants that sit beside the boats that supply them.

Sea Isle City Harborfest, an annual event set for the first Saturday in October, is a celebration of all of that, featuring delicious seafood, live music, vendors and more.

Cape May Oktoberfest

Quiet Festival
Shh! The Ocean City Quiet Festival is just around the corner. (File Art)

If you've ever been to Ocean City, New Jersey - aka, America's Greatest Family Resort - then you know it's all about weird, wacky, wholesome family fun. Aside from its boardwalk (with amusement rides!) and beaches, the shore town also hosts a slew of silly annual events, one of which is the Quiet Festival.

The Quiet Festival is essentially just that - an end-of-the-summer sayonara to the shoobies, but in true Ocean City-style, all in good fun. To celebrate, events include bubble blowing, kite flying, a yawn along and other no-noice activities.
