Heavy rains could turn into downpours in the Philadelphia region tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

The hazardous weather outlook issued for much of the region Monday says that scattered showers and thunderstorms could create localized flooding.

All of Delaware, Eastern Pennsylvania, and most of New Jersey are included in the outlook, which is in effect for the evening and night.

According to NBC Philadelphia meteorologist Glenn Schwartz, much of the region could stay dry but areas hit with rain could see a significant amount of it.

The possible rain proceeds more sweltering heat coming this week. According to the National Weather Service, the heat index on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons could reach 100.
