Car strikes, kills horse hauling buggy in hit-and-run on Delaware road

Police are searching for a driver who fled after striking and killing a horse hauling an Amish buggy along a Delaware road Wednesday night.

The incident happened around 10 p.m. at Sharon Hill and West Denneys roads northwest of Dover, according to Delaware State Police.

A 44-year-old man was in control of a horse-drawn buggy that was stopped at the stop sign intersecting the two roads.

Police believe the horse became spooked and jutted out into the eastbound travel lane of West Denneys Road, where it was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound. The vehicle fled after colliding with the horse.

The man was not injured, but the horse died at the scene, police said.

The make and model of the vehicle remain unknown.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Cpl. C. Nicholson at (302) 378-5749 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
