Maurice Green, of Overbrook, is charged with murder for allegedly killing 81-year-old Marie Buck, who was shot inside the South Philly grocery store show owns on Christmas Eve.

A Philadelphia man has been charged with killing the 81-year-old owner of a South Philly grocery store on Christmas Eve.

Maurice Green, 31, of the 5400 block of Berks Street in Overbrook, was charged Thursday with murder for the fatal shooting of Marie Buck, who owned Marie's Grocery Store at Titan and South Sixth streets in South Philly.

Green allegedly shot Buck 11 times, according to CBSPhilly.com. Police said the defendant entered the store that morning with the intention of shooting Buck's grandson, whom Green believed had a role in stealing jewelry from him, an expensive chain.

"It's downright evil when you think about it, because at some point in time you knew who you were firing at," Police Commissioner Richard Ross told reporters. "You knew who was in that store. It's pure evil."

Buck sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the shooting and was transported to Jefferson Hospital, where she died at 9:12 a.m. on Saturday.

A vigil will be held in her honor on Thursday night.
