Homelessness in New Jersey down nearly 14 percent

The overall number of homeless people in New Jersey still remains above the 10,000 mark

Homelessness in New Jersey has dropped almost 14 percent since last year, according to the latest “snapshot” count.

The NJ Counts 2015 homeless survey, conducted annually by Monarch Housing Associates, reported a 21 percent overall decrease in the number of homeless families in the Garden State in the past year.

The count considers individuals staying in emergency shelters, transitional housing and safe houses, as well as those who are unsheltered on the street on the night of the count.

Burlington County's homeless population accounts for just over 13 percent of the state's total, making it the second-highest county in New Jersey.

The overall number of homeless people in New Jersey is still above the 10,000 mark, and more than 10 percent of the homeless are young adults between 18 and 24 years old, the survey reports.
