Officials: New Jersey Pine Barrens fire sparked by charcoal briquettes

Blaze originiated from improper disposal of briquettes on private property

State environmental officials from New Jersey say the Pine Barrens forest fire on Monday that burned roughly 1,000 acres in Burlington and Ocean Counties was sparked by charcoal briquettes that were improperly disposed of on private property.

The fire that started in Woodland Township, Burlington County, before spreading to Ocean County. According to officials, it was completely contained by Tuesday. However, it continued to smoulder on Wednesday, CBS 3 reports.

Officials added that the fire spread quickly as a result of dry, windy conditions and crews had difficulty getting to the site because it began in a remote area.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service is investigating the fire. It is not yet clear if anyone faces charges or fines.
