New Jersey woman struck, killed by dump truck while crossing street

Victim believed to be in 20s or 30s

Officials in New Jersey are investigating the death of a woman, who was struck by a large dump truck Tuesday morning while crossing a street in Union City. The woman, who has not yet been identified, is believed to be in her 20s or 30s.

According to NBC 10, the truck driver, 40-year old Jhobany Cruz, of Philadelphia, was making a right turn onto a highway at about 7:20 am. Authorities said Cruz had a green light and hit the woman in the crosswalk.

The victim was transported in critical condition to Jersey City Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.

At this time, authorities do not believe that speed or cell phone usage were factors in the collision, but investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from the area and the truck is being inspected for any signs of mechanical failure or overload.

Cruz remained at the scene and no charges have been filed.
