N.J. bill could lead to electronic licenses

With an e-license program, drivers could use an app on their phones to show their driving credentials.

The New Jersey Senate Transportation Committee approved a bill Monday that requires the state Motor Vehicle Commission to study and make recommendations concerning electronic driver’s licenses and mobile applications.

The legislation aims to study the feasibility electronic driver’s licenses in New Jersey, including costs, savings, security issues and other related concerns.

With such a program, drivers could use an app on their phones to show their driving credentials. Traditional plastic licenses could still be used.

Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean and Senate Transportation Committee Chairman Nicholas Sacco are co-sponsors of bill S-2695.
