A South Jersey man was sentenced to eight years behind bars Friday after being found guilty last year of growing 17 marijuana plants, according to an Associated Press report on CBSPhilly.

Jon Peditto, of Mays Landing, must serve a third of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole, the AP reports.

Peditto, who is a 54-year-old photographer, maintains that he grew the marijuana "mostly for his personal use," while also admitting to selling it to friends and family.

Peditto, who represented himself, told the AP that prosecutors were trying to make him out to be a "pot tycoon."
