Commuters who come to Philadelphia from South Jersey can now count on a new option after NJ Transit announced the launch of additional peak-hour bus service at stops west of City Hall.

Beginning Tuesday, the transportation agency will start running weekday morning and afternoon routes utilizing JFK Boulevard, Market Street and 30th Street Station. These peak-hour trips will be serviced by existing routes 414 and 417, as well as the newly created route 555.

“We are pleased the expansion of the 414 and 417 routes and the new 555 route will provide a one-seat ride for Burlington and Camden county residents to locations west of City Hall in Philadelphia,’’ NJ Transit Executive Director Steven H. Santoro said. “By providing direct access, residents in those two New Jersey counties will now have their commutes to their ultimate destination — Center City — improved.’’

The route 555 bus will operate three morning and three evening trips that have been reassigned from the 551 express line between Avandale Park & Ride and Philadelphia.

Greyhound Terminal in Philadelphia and the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden will not be served by the new route 555 buses. Morning service will stop at Sixth and Market streets before heading westbound on JFK Boulevard to 30th Street Station. Afternoon service will start on JFK Boulevard at 30th Street and proceed eastbound on Market Street, near City Hall, to Fifth Street.

The route 414 and 417 buses will continue to operate via Sixth and Market streets to City Hall, with service continuing westbound on JFK Boulevard to 30th Street. Afternoon service will start on JFK Boulevard at 30th Street and then run eastbound on Market Street around City Hall to Fifth Street.

Commuters are advised to visit njtransit.com and consult the agency's transit map for updates on the new schedules.
