A New Jersey Transit police officer pulled a man off a set of tracks just before a train passed over the area.

According to New Jersey Transit PBA Local 304, the rescue occurred Friday morning at the Secaucus Junction.

Surveillance video showing the officer's heroic actions was obtained by NJ 101.5:

The police union said there was a report of a confrontation on a train at the station. Victor Ortiz, a 16-year veteran of the force, arrived at the scene and observed a man exiting a train car. Ortiz followed the man, who ran off the platform and along the tracks.

After a short conversation with Ortiz, the man intentionally laid in the path of an oncoming train and refused to move.

The officer struggled with the man before eventually pulling him to the safety seconds before the train arrived.

“Everyday when we put on our uniforms and go to work we do not know the situations that await us, and we must be prepared for anything,” the police union said Saturday in a Facebook post. "We commend Officer Ortiz for his bravery and heroism!"

The rescued man was not identified.
