A Philadelphia police officer is being recognized for his quick actions to save a man from a fiery crash in the city’s Nicetown section early Wednesday morning.

According to reports and video footage captured by NBC10, the 47-year-old unidentified male driver reportedly sailed over a median while traveling south on Broad Street near Wyoming Avenue and crashed into a parked car and a van, before the vehicle came to a stop and the engine caught on fire.

Officer Joel Rice, a six-year veteran of the department currently serving the 39th District, was driving near the scene and came upon the crash, NBC10 said.

Rice jumped into action and saved the man, who was unconscious at the time, by pulling him through a door as the “flames started to grow,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told NBC10.

The victim sustained a concussion and minor injuries. An investigation into what caused the crash is underway.
