Police: Philadelphia toddler ingests crack cocaine while at day care

Philadelphia police and the Department of Human Services are investigating after authorities say a 3-year-old girl ingested crack cocaine while at a West Philadelphia day care.

According to CBSPhilly, police say a day care worker at the Works Of Learning Early Daycare on Haverford Avenue rushed the child to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia after noticing the girl was chewing on something that turned out to be a small plastic bag containing the illegal substance.

Police say traces of crack cocaine were found in the 3-year-old’s system, CBSPhilly reports. The child was kept at CHOP for observation and is reported to be in fair condition.

The question now is where and how she got the drug. Police told CBSPhilly they “do not think” the drugs were found inside the day care, and the child’s parents have also denied knowing anything.

“The parents are aware of what happened, but obviously are not happy about what happened and are still trying to figure it out themselves,” Lt. John Walker of the Philadelphia police told CBSPhilly.
