Philly's weather rollercoaster heads back downhill for the weekend

Our rollercoaster winter weather is heading downhill again.

Back-to-back coastal storms dropped snow on the region amid an arctic blast last weekend, but moderate temperatures have ruled since Wednesday, with a high of 66 on Thursday in Philadelphia.

The mercury soared to 67 degrees in the afternoon at Atlantic City International Airport, setting a new record high for the date and erasing the old record of 63 degrees in 1913, according to the National Weather Service.

Now forecasters are saying light snow will arrive on Saturday morning. The snow may mix in or change to sleet or freezing rain from south to north later in the morning into the afternoon. That wintry mix may linger into Saturday night with some accumulation of snow and ice anticipated.

Another brief period of wintry mix is possible on Monday, when numerous community groups will perform a day of service to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The storm system moved across the country, spreading heavy snow and rainfall in northern California before heading to the southern Plains on Thursday. Forecasters said crippling ice accumulations and heavy rain there could cause widespread power outages and flooding this weekend.

Looking ahead, forecasters see a 90 percent probability of high-than-normal temperatures in Philadelphia over the next two weeks, as illustrated in the map below:
