American Airlines plane makes emergency landing at Philadelphia International Airport

Passenger plane lands safely with 140 people on board

An engine issue with an American Airlines passenger plane forced an emergency landing at Philadelphia International Airport on Friday night, officials said.

According to 6 ABC, witnesses reported a fire burning visibly from the plane's engine, prompting a report of an aircraft in distress.

American Airlines representative Josh Freed confirmed to PhillyVoice that an issue with the engine led to a visible excess burnoff of fuel, but that no part of the plane itself was on fire.

Several passengers on board called 911 as the plane flew in circles for 20 minutes before landing safely.

There were 140 passengers aboard the flight, but no one was injured.
