A New Jersey woman was charged with theft on Monday after police say she stole the wallet of an emergency medical technician (EMT) who was attempting to save her dying boyfriend after a hit-and-run accident in Harrison Township.

According to authorities, 25-year-old Brittany Carulli took the wallet from the purse of an unidentified EMT during the transport of 27-year-old Jacob Dromgoole, a pedestrian who was fatally struck Sunday afternoon on Mullica Hill Road.

The EMT, an ambulance worker with Gloucester County Emergency Medical Services, had permitted Carulli to enter the vehicle in order to grieve the loss of her boyfriend.

A preliminary investigation of the accident revealed that Dromgoole exited his vehicle for reasons unknown and entered the westbound lane of Mullica Hill Road, where he was hit by a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene of the crash, where a nurse who passed by attempted unsuccessfully to revive the victim.

Upon realizing that she had lost her wallet, the EMT reported the items missing, including credit and debit cards, a New Jersey driver's license and $120 in cash. The EMT told investigators that no one other than Carulli, a resident of Pitman, would have had access to her purse during the time of the incident.

Detectives later questioned Carulli on Monday and recovered the stolen items, with the exception of the $120, after obtaining an admission of the theft, police said. Carulli was arrested and charged with the theft on a summons. She has been released pending a municipal court hearing.
