A Philadelphia Police officer shot a man who charged at him with a knife in Kensington early Monday morning, police say.

According to police, the officer responded to a report of a man armed with a knife on the 3200 block of F Street around 2:50 a.m.

When the officer arrived, a 26-year-old Hispanic male came up to his car and tried to stab him through the open window of his patrol car, authorities say.

The officer drove forward, got out and drew his gun, police say, and the man came running toward him with the blade raised.

The officer fired and hit the man in the right arm and right hip and was taken to Temple University Hospital where he is listed in stable condition, according to authorities.

The man's knife was recovered at the scene and police say no other injuries were reported.

The Philadelphia Police Department releases the names of all officers involved in civilian shootings within a 72-hour period after adopting a new policy in July.

The policy has drawn protests and a new bill in the state legislature would reverse the policy.
