South Jersey man shot dead by woman he was trying to surprise

A Burlington County man was shot and killed Wednesday night by the woman he was trying to surprise in her home.

The man, apparently mistaken by the woman for an intruder, was fatally shot in the chest as he was on the phone with the woman, authorities said.

Kelvin Watford, 50, of Willingboro, was found by police officers at the bottom of the stairs inside the home on Genesee Street in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, about 11:23 p.m. Thursday, the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman, who has not been identified, called a 911 dispatcher after she shot her friend, according to prosecutors.

The woman told authorities she heard noises, got her gun, walked to her bedroom door, saw a shadow and fired at a someone on her dark stairway.

The incident is under investigation and no charges have been filed yet.
