Stolen car bursts into flames after crashing near I-76 in Philadelphia

Police: Two suspects taken into custody, crews battle fire

Philadelphia police are investigating after a stolen vehicle crashed near I-76 and burst into flames Wednesday evening.

Authorities say the car, stolen from a 7-11 in Northeast Philadelphia Wednesday morning, was involved in a crash with another vehicle on I-76 near Montgomery Drive, NBC 10 reports. As the suspects blew a stop sign and sped up toward the exit ramp, they crashed into a second vehicle and injured the two passengers inside.

Two suspects in the stolen vehicle fled the scene and ran back to the expressway, where they were caught by police. It was not clear whether they were the same individuals who stole the car Wednesday morning.

Fire crews were on hand to extinguish the flames as the accident produced a traffic jam on I-76 shortly after 6 p.m.

All of those injured, including the two suspects, Hahnemann University Hospital for treatment.

The theft and accident remain under investigation.
