Expect storms, more heat in Philly area this weekend

An overdue cooldown is expected next week

A heat wave that has lingered throughout the week isn't expected to let up until Tuesday, despite brewing storms that look set to hit the region this weekend.

After mid-90s temperatures persisted on Thursday and Friday, prompting excessive heating warnings in and outside of Philadelphia, the city is set to boil again on Saturday with an expected high temperature of 94, according to the National Weather Service.

Thunderstorms could hit the city Saturday night as lows hit the mid 70s, and we face another chance of storms during the day on Sunday with an expected high of 89, forecasters say. A round of rain and storms is more likely Sunday night, mainly before midnight, as lows again hover in the mid 70s.

At the Jersey Shore, expect highs this weekend in the mid 80s and lows in the mid 70s, with a chance of storms Saturday night (mainly after 8 p.m.) and throughout the day Sunday.

Those spending the weekend in the Poconos will see highs of 83 on Saturday and 76 Sunday, but bet on some heavy storms Saturday night. Some storms could also hit after 2 p.m. Sunday, becoming likely Sunday night into the early morning hours on Monday, according to NWS.

Temperatures in Philly are expected to hit 90 again on Monday, but Tuesday will bring relief. After lows in the city have a chance of dipping below 70 on Monday night for the first time in over a week, highs are set to stay in the low to mid 80s through the rest of the week.

Forecasters predict a slight chance of both showers in the city Wednesday night and storms for Thursday, but the week here should be clear otherwise.
