Severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued for parts of the Philadelphia suburbs late Thursday afternoon.

An earlier tornado warning has expired.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly said that shortly after 5 p.m. a severe thunderstorm was located on radar over Downingtown, Chester County, and moving eastward at 25 mph. Forecastersd said 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail was possible.

The warning, in effect until 6:15 p.m., posted for south-central Montgomery County, central Chester County and central Delaware County, northeast Philadelphia and southeastern Bucks County, and for areas of central New Jersey.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for Philadelphia through 9 p.m. Thursday.

The warning said minor damage to vehicles is possible and damage to trees and power lines could be expected.

The NWS recommended that residents move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building to protect themselves.
