Two suspects arrested in carjacking of doctor in Center City

Police use cell phone location information to track down suspects

Philadelphia police have taken two male suspects into custody after they allegedly carjacked a woman at a Center City parking lot, threatening her and attempting to a withdraw funds from her bank account.

Authorities say the victim, a doctor at Pennsylvania Hospital, was abducted from a garage at 8th and Delancey streets around 6 a.m. Wednesday after two armed suspects approached her and forced her into her blue Honda Fit, according to NBC 10. She then drove the suspects to an Exxon gas station at York and Aramingo avenues in Port Richmond.

Police reviewed surveillance video at the station and determined that one of the suspects entered the store with the victim, demanding that she withdraw money at an ATM. When attempts to do so were unsuccessful, the suspect walked up to the front counter and told the victim to purchase three packs of cigarettes.

An employee at the gas station, Manveer Kumer, said he could tell that something was awry and that it did not appear the suspect and the victim were a couple, as the former claimed. Kumer said the woman, who has not been identified, attempted to signal that something was wrong. He told the suspect that only one pack of cigarettes could be bought with a credit card, at which point investigators said the suspect left the victim in the gas station and drove off with her car.

Police were able to find the suspects using location information from the woman's cell phone, which remained inside her vehicle as they drove off. They were arrested at A Street and Allegheny Avenue.

The identities of the suspects have not been revealed and police have not announced charges.

According to 6ABC, one of the suspects is a known drifter who was arrested for a theft inside of Pennsylvania Hospital last week. The second suspect was not expected to face charges.
