On Saturday night, Philly native and former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez returns to the octagon for the first time since his controversial no contest against Dustin Poirier back in May at UFC 211.
While a rematch against Poirer would've been nice, the 33-year-old's scheduled fight against Justin Gaethje (18-0) could be even more entertaining.
The two lightweights will meet at UFC 218 in Detroit after spending a good portion of the last couple months working together (sort of) as coaches on the latest season of "The Ultimate Fighter." As is the tradition, the two coaches meet at the conclusion of the season – and it's shaping up to be quite the matchup between a couple of brawlers, with the winner likely in line for a shot at the lightweight title.
Currently, Gaethje is the favorite at -175; Alvarez (28-5) is +155.
In the main event, Jose Aldo will look for some revenge against featherweight title holder Max Holloway, who beat the former champ by TKO at UFC 212. The co-main event features heavyweight contenders Alistair Overeem and Francis Ngannou, and rounding out the main card is Henry Cejudo vs. Anthony Pettis, and Tecia Torres vs. Michelle Waterson.
Also on the card is South Philly fighter-slash-actor Paul Felder (14-3), who will be facing fellow lightweight Charles Oliveira (22-7). That fight will be the headliner of the FS1 undercard and could provide some fireworks of its own. Felder has won four of his last five fights, including back-to-back first-round knockouts that earned him a pair of "Performance of the Night" bonuses.
