Wildfire in the Pine Barrens burns 464 acres

Mostly contained, but likely to burn for days, says NJDEP

A fire of 464 acres is burning in the heart of the Pine Barrens in Bass River State Forest.

The wildfire began Thursday evening.

And while the blaze was better than 90 percent contained as of late Friday afternoon, Larry Hajna of the state Department of Environmental Protection said even with rain expected there are areas within the containment perimeter that have not yet burned – and those spots will eventually ignite and burn for days.

An aerial survey was being done to check on the containment. No one has been injured and no structures threatened, he added.

The fire is near Munion Field and Dans Bridge roads in Burlington County, not far from the Garden State Parkway.
