Philly woman charged with hiding child's death for SSI benefits

Philadelphia woman Nakia Calicat, 38, has been charged by indictment for allegedly hiding the death of her daughter in order to continue receiving Supplemental Security Income payments.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Calicat gave birth to a child in 2006 and filed for SSI benefits in 2007. Her child died in 2010, but the Social Security Administration didn't find out until 2013.

Calicut continued receiving benefits illegally during this time period, racking up approximately $26,224 in total. She is being charged with ten counts of wire fraud, one count of theft of government money, two counts of false statements, and one count of Social Security representative payee fraud and faces up to 225 years in prison, restitution for the illegal benefits, and a $3 million fine.
