Church organist sentenced in sexual assault of teenage boys

73-year-old man receives 20-year term

A former church organist in South Jersey has been sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting a number of teenage boys for more than a decade, authorities announced Tuesday.

According to prosecutors, 73-year-old Joseph E. Cuthbert received 20 years and will have to spend at least 17 in prison before becoming eligible for parole.

In June, Cuthbert pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault and one count of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

Authorities say the assaults took place between November 2002 and December 2013, and the four male victims were between the ages of 13 and 16.

Cuthbert came into contact with the boys through his role as a church organist, according to prosecutors.
