Philadelphia City Council passed a bill Thursday to set up a Philadelphia Water Department program to assist the city’s low-income families with maintaining running water, The Philadelphia Tribune reports.
The Income-Based Water Rate Assistance Program, introduced by Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez, will establish a payment agreement and debt forgiveness program with the Philadelphia Water Department for qualified low-income families based on their unique income and capacity.
Quinones-Sanchez told The Philadelphia Tribute she expects quick enactment of the legislation, and Philly.com reports Mayor Michael Nutter's office has said he will sign it.
Quinones-Sanchez added there remains more than a years-worth of work for the program to be fully functional. The details will be ironed out under the administration of Mayor-Elect Jim Kenney.
