A dog was found dead in a trash can on the side of a Cape May County road this week, and now authorities and an animal control service want help figuring out what happened.

The dog was found by an Upper Township municipal worker Thursday morning, according to a release from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.

Shore Animal Control was called to the scene, and the animal control group’s Facebook post about the situation quickly went viral.

The dog had a broken leg when it was found, according to Shore Animal Control, and was dead when the municipal worker found the trash can, but it’s possible the dog was alive when she was initially placed there.

The dog was a Corgi-Terrier or Cattle Dog mix, and the trash can had fecal matter in it when the municipal worker found the dog, which might shed light on whether it was alive when it was placed there, according to the Courier-Post.
