Documentary "The Polgar Variant" will show at the IFFP.

Each year, the Israeli Film Festival of Philadelphia brings a selection of films to the city in order to improve our understanding of Israeli society. This year's festival, which is its 19th, began Saturday, March 7, but lasts through Sunday, March 29, so you have plenty of time to see some eye-opening films.

The screenings are held in regional venues like International House in University City, the Bryn Mawr Film Institute and Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy in Bryn Mawr. The nine remaining screenings feature drama, comedy and documentary films. Double-feature screenings are available on select nights.

"The Polgar Variant," a documentary, tells the story of three Hungarian-Jewish sisters raised in Budapest in the 1970s who were driven to become chess masters by their father. "Hill Start" is a family dramedy starring Israeli comic actor Shlomo Bar-Aba. "Apples from the Desert" is a drama in which a young Ultra Orthodox Jewish woman explores secularism.
