It's National Ice Cream Day

Here's where you, and your dog, can score a free frosty treat

Nothing says summer like ice cream.

Just because 87 percent of us have a container of ice cream in the freezer, according to Ice Cream.com., doesn’t mean we can’t use more – especially when it’s free – on National Ice Cream Day.

To celebrate Sunday’s dripping red letter day, several chains are offering free ice cream. Given the heat advisory the region is under, the celebration comes at a great time.

Carvel, for example, is offering one free ice cream cone with every cone purchased.

Friendly’s in Pennsylvania and New Jersey will also being giving out free ice cream. The first scoop will cost $1.99 and the second scoop is free.

Dippin' Dots Ice Cream is giving away samples of their new Redberry sherbet Sunday.  

And you don’t even have to leave your dog home in your quest for free ice cream. Petsmart is offering free dog-safe ice cream at participating store with a PetsHotel location. If you can’t get to the store, you can find the recipe for the pooch-friendly treat here.
