Johns Hopkins plans first U.S. penis transplants

The aim of the initiative is to help wounded vets

Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Maryland is planning a series of penis transplants - a first for the United States - in an effort to restore sexual function and enable reproduction for military veterans wounded in war.

According to 6ABCthe procedures are expected to treat approximately 1,300 wounded veterans, most of whom are under the age of 35 and were wounded by roadside bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Hopkins medical team hopes to perform the first procedure within the next year, possibly even sooner, 6ABC reports.

On record, there have only been a few penis transplants performed worldwide, including one last year in South Africa and another in China.
