Margate's Lucy the Elephant announces candidacy for president

National Historic Landmark turns 135

As Americans unwind from the Republican National Convention and brace for the Democratic National Convention next week, a newcomer will be on the ballot on Saturday in Margate.

Lucy the Elephant, a six-story wooden structure, announced a presidential run to celebrate the National Historic Landmark's 135th birthday.

"On your side since 1881!" is Lucy's campaign slogan.

Attendees will be able to cast a vote for Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton or Lucy the Elephant from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in a special election.

Lucy was constructed in 1881 with hopes of attracting prospective real estate buyers to Margate. After a 1969 campaign to repair the crumbling structure, Lucy was added to the National Park Registry of Historic Landmarks in 1976.

This weekend's free event is welcoming people of all ages and will feature a 9-hole miniature golf course, a rock climbing wall, carnival games, a stilt walker and more.

Free parking will be available at the Margate Municipal Building located at 9001 Winchester Avenue. Shuttle buses will operate every 15 minutes to transport people to the party.
