N.J. mayor calls Christie to task over lingering power outages

Greenwich Township mayor calls on Christie to pay attention to New Jersey's west coast

The mayor of Gloucester County town issued a stern message to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie on Sunday over the state's response to widespread power outages following last Tuesday's massive storm.

At the height of the storm, according to NBC 10, nearly 280,000 utility customers were without power. By Sunday night, about 20,000 customers were still without power. More than half, 12,000, were in Gloucester County.

Joined by members of town council and residents who still didn't have their power restored, Greenwich Township Mayor George W. Shivery said that it was "time Governor Christie paid attention to New Jersey's west coast."

Atlantic City Electric acknowledged that Saturday's rainy weather hampered efforts to restore power for the remainder of those who were still without electricity.

Christie, who launched a website for his upcoming 2016 presidential bid on Saturday, referred to ACE's commitment to address the ongoing outages on Sunday and thanked New Jersey families for their patience and resilience.

Approximately 1,600 workers were out on Sunday to attend to downed wires and trees from the destructive summer storm.
