Wawa has begun to reintroduce its self-service coffee and fountain beverages at a limited number of stores in the Philadelphia region.
The gradual rollout began May 11 and includes locations in Reading, Pennsylvania and Cape May County, New Jersey. Wawa plans to resume self-service options at additional stores in the weeks to come while adhering to COVID-19 guidelines.
Customers will still have the option to have their coffee poured and prepared by a Wawa employee.
Wawa has implemented safety measures, including wrapped stirrers and tissue paper for customers to use while touching pour handles. Social distancing markers are placed on the floor to ensure customers stand six feet apart.
Each location also will have a team of employees responsible for frequently cleaning the store.
The resumption of self-service coffee and beverages will improve service speed while maximizing social distance, Wawa said in a statement.
Initial feedback from customers has been positive, the company said. Wawa will continue seeking customer and employee input as it considers resuming self-service options at additional stores.
Wawa ceased self-service at all locations on March 20. Only employees could serve beverages to customers and bakery products had to be wrapped and handed to customers. Wawa halted all made-to-order food services on March 27. But items are available for delivery on DoorDash, GrubHub, and UberEats.
