Eagles practice notes, August 18, 2015: Eagles love the wheel route

A DeMarco sighting!

Today was a very short, fairly uneventful practice, which makes sense since the Baltimore Ravens will be coming to town to have joint practices with the Eagles for the rest of the week. Here's what I saw:

• DeMarco Murray practiced today and participated in team drills, which has been a rarity this camp. Kiko Alonso also returned from his concussion. Not practicing today were Zach Ertz, who will miss the rest of camp, DeMeco Ryans, who is fine, and the perpetually inactive Earl Wolff. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if Wolff didn't survive the 75-man cuts on September 1st.

• The Eagles have run a ton of wheel routes this camp. In case you're unfamiliar with a wheel route, it's a play designed to get the running back matched up on a linebacker, and beat him deep. It looks like this:

Here's the Eagles running the wheel against the Redskins in 2013. Ryan Kerrigan has no chance trying to stick with LeSean McCoy:

That's a play that destroys man coverage, and the Eagles have really worked on it quite a bit in camp.

• RG update! Here's who has worked with the ones each day of camp so far at RG:

  1. Aug 2: Matt Tobin
  2. Aug 3: Andrew Gardner
  3. Aug 4: Matt Tobin
  4. Aug 6: John Moffitt
  5. Aug 7: Andrew Gardner
  6. Aug 8: Julian Vandervelde
  7. Aug 9: Julian Vandervelde
  8. Aug 11: John Moffitt
  9. Aug 12: Andrew Gardner
  10. Aug 13: Andrew Gardner
  11. Aug 14: Andrew Gardner
  12. Aug 15 (Walk-through): Andrew Gardner
  13. Aug 16: (Game): Andrew Gardner
  14. Aug 18: Andrew Gardner

Chip Kelly said the others are still in the mix, but from my vantage point, it looks like Gardner might have this jawn on lock.

• A couple years ago, Chip Kelly called Joe Kruger, "Krugs." And then eventually, Chip stopped calling him "Krugs" and began referring to him a Kruger. That's when you knew "Krugs" was a goner. In today's press conference, Chip referred to Matt Barkley as "Matt, " and Tim Tebow as "Timmy." In the past, Chip has called Barkley, "Barks." My #ChipNicknameTeaLeaves say that this is a huge development for Timmy.

• As noted above, the Ravens will be in town tomorrow, which should make for awesome practice notes.
