Report: Principal who fired gay educator at Catholic school steps down

The principal who made the decision to fire Margie Winters, a teacher at Waldron Mercy Academy on the Main Line, announced Friday that she's resigning, the Inquirer reported.

Nell Stetser has been the principal of the school for five years. She faced backlash last year when she fired Winters, the former director of religious education, last summer after a few parents complained that she was married to a woman.

Parents of the students at the Catholic school were outraged and signed a petition that gathered more than 20,000 signatures. It was presented by Winters and her supporters to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's Center City offices last August. The petition called for her reinstatement.

The Inquirer reported that Stetser's announcement came in the form of an email and will be effective by the end of the school year. She did not make mention of the controversy, but said her decision was a "personal" one.
