Comcast NBCUniversal pledged Thursday to hire 10,000 reservists, veterans and their spouses or domestic partners by 2017.

The new employees will serve in various capacities ranging from network engineering to human resources to customer service.

Comcast has partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to hire about 4,200 veterans since 2012, easily achieving its previous goal of hiring 2,000 vets by 2015.

The unemployment rate for veterans was 5.3 percent at the end of 2014, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate for veterans who have served since September 2001 was 7.2 percent, a 1.8 percent drop from 2013.

"We are so grateful for the impressive men and women who served our country to preserve our freedom," said Comcast Cable President Neil Smit, a former Navy SEAL. "The military teaches valuable life lessons about leadership, teamwork and commitment ― all skills which are highly transferable and we are excited to bring this new talent to Comcast NBCUniversal."

Comcast also is creating a vice president position to oversee its military and veterans initiatives.
