Woman receives backlash after posting photo of dog with duct-taped mouth

Viral image spurs overwhelming volume of complaints to South Daytona police

A woman has received scrutiny on social media after posting what appears to be a photo of her dog with duct tape around its mouth.

Katie Brown, who lives in South Daytona, Florida, according to her Facebook profile, posted the photo Friday morning with the words, "This is what happens when you don't shut up!!!"

The post, which has since been removed, had been shared more than 334,000 times by 10 p.m. Saturday, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

Later that day, she posted a status update that read, "Dont panic everyone it was only for a minute but hasnt barked since... POINT MADE!!!"

Animal lovers flooded Volusia County, Florida, law enforcement officials with calls and online messages Friday night and early Saturday morning following the post, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported.

Police on Sunday did not yet know Brown's location and were not able to reach her.

South Daytona Lt. Dan Dietrich said Saturday investigators had learned Brown left South Daytona 12 to 18 months ago and that the dog has never lived in the city. The investigation was turned over to law enforcement in Avon, Connecticut, where Brown was supposed to be living.

"It's great that everybody's concerned for the animals and for dogs and that when they see this they want it sent to local law enforcement," South Daytona Lt. Dan Dietrich told the Daytona Beach News-Journal. "Unfortunately, we are a small agency and it has literally shut our police department down."
