Nick Bond, an 18-year-old senior at Springfield (Montgomery County) High School, tragically passed away on Monday afternoon after suffering from a rare brain injury. While playing hockey on Sunday for the Wissahickon Warriors, Bond collapsed after leaving the ice. According to the club’s website, he was taken to Einstein Hospital where he had surgery to relieve pressure on his brain but was unable to recover.

Here is part of what Kevin Hamel, president of the Wissahickon Skating Club, wrote in memory of Bond:

Year after year Nick was selected by his teammates and coaches as team captain. He led with confidence and compassion. Though somewhat diminutive, Nick fearlessly challenged every opposing player regardless of size. He was, without question, the epitome of what we want most in our children.

Before the Flyers’ game against the New York Islanders on Monday night, the organization did their part to make sure Bond’s memory continues to live on.

PA announcer Lou Nolan led the crowd in a moment of silence in Bond’s memory before the national anthem. And while singing that anthem, Lauren Hart didn’t have the customary orange and black on. Instead, the Flyers anthemist was wearing a Wissahickon Warriors jersey in tribute to Bond.

A memorial fund has been set up in Nick’s honor, and the donations received ($27,000 as of late Thursday night) will go towards a foundation/cause of the Bond family’s choosing. You can donate here.
