South Jersey man charged with scamming Hurricane Sandy victim

Allegedly never completed work he was paid to do

A South Jersey man is accused of taking thousands of dollars to renovate a home damaged by Hurricane Sandy, but he never completed the job, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

According to authorities, 36-year-old Barnegat resident Greg Montgomery, owner of GS Construction and Property Maintenance, received about $92,000 to raise and restore a home in Bayville that was damaged by the storm.

Despite receiving payments in October 2013 and April 2014, Montgomery never completed the work, prosecutors say.

He has been charged with second-degree theft by failure to make required disposition and was placed in custody at Ocean County Jail in lieu of $35,000 bail.

Authorities are asking anyone deceived by GS Construction and Property Maintenance to contact Detective Brad Frank of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit at 732-929-2027.
