Police: Man opens fire on dog that bit women on Northeast Philly street

Police took a man into custody Tuesday night after they say he opened fire on a dog that had bitten two women on a Northeast Philadelphia street, NBC10 reports.

The incident began shortly before 6 p.m. on the 200 block of Lockart Lane.

Police say a 60-year-old woman and her 31-year-old daughter were walking to their home when they were attacked by one of two dogs that had escaped from a home on the same block. The women were bitten in their lower backs by a dog believed to be a Mastiff, authorities say.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene, and the two women were taken to Holy Redeemer Hospital in stable condition.

As Animal Control and Philadelphia police officers began investigating, a 67-year-old man who also lived on the block took out a revolver and fired at least two shots at the dogs, authorities say. He was taken into custody.

The two dogs, neither of which were struck or injured in the shooting, were taken to Animal Control headquarters.

It was not immediately known whether the man will be charged.
